WHY BREATHING BECOMES THE LIMITING FACTOR
Most athletes don't think about breathing.
Until it's all they can think about.
Early in competition, breathing feels effortless.
As intensity rises, breathing becomes faster.
As fatigue builds, every breath demands more effort.
Eventually, many athletes reach the point where their lungs feel like they're working harder than the rest of their body.
That's because breathing isn't free.
Every breath is powered by muscles.
Your diaphragm, intercostals and accessory breathing muscles contract thousands of times during training and competition. Like every other muscle in your body, they fatigue.
As these muscles tire, they require more oxygen and more blood flow to keep working.
Your body has a decision to make.
Keep supplying the muscles driving movement.
Or keep supplying the muscles keeping you breathing.
When the work of breathing becomes high enough, the body prioritises blood flow to the respiratory muscles. As a result, less blood can be available to the working muscles in your arms and legs.
This response is known as the respiratory muscle metaboreflex.
It's one of the reasons your legs can suddenly feel heavy even though they're still capable of producing force.
Imagine two athletes with identical strength.
The same speed.
The same aerobic fitness.
The same skill.
The only difference is their respiratory system.
One athlete has trained it.
The other hasn't.
As fatigue builds, the athlete with the stronger respiratory system spends less energy on breathing.
That means more oxygen.
More blood flow.
More energy available for producing movement instead of simply staying alive.
At the highest level of sport, those differences may appear small.
But Olympic medals, world championships and professional contracts are often decided by fractions of a percent.
Small physiological advantages become decisive competitive advantages.
